Now what?? With the current pace and scale of uncertain changes, now what?? How best to stay buoyant, amidst all the disruption/turbulence? Build an ark??

Don Sardella – Dealing with Unintended Consequences 1:44

To all our highly valued clients and acquaintances:

To reiterate from October, many have experienced a relentless series of unforeseeable twists and turns throughout 2025 and are now working to determine how to make the best use of the months ahead before 2026.

During the 2008 financial crisis, also known as the global financial crisis or the Panic of 2008, I was introduced to a fantastic long-term client who asked me if I could help him build an ark. (aka known as a business that would continue to be financially viable and buoyant, no matter what else was going on in the economy, the political world, the environment, etc.)

He laid out 45 goals to do that and sent me an email last year citing that he had accomplished 42 out of 45 of his lifetime goals (so far). He did great.

I recently asked my trusty, verifiable research software this question:

“What’s the essence of the story of Noah’s Ark and why might it be a good metaphorical model for people/families to consider building their own contemporary version (spiritually, health-wise, familywise and financially) during today’s rapidly turbulent times and in the zeitgeist of our dizzying, extraordinary, dynamically changing world

The essence of the story of Noah’s Ark is about foresight, preparedness, and resilience in the face of overwhelming change/uncertainty, making it a powerful metaphor for families/individuals in today’s rapidly evolving world.

The Core of Noah’s Ark – The story holistically highlights these key points:

  • Acting on insight and intuition even when others are skeptical.
  • The value of preparation & adaptability in response to warning signs.
  • The importance of protecting and preserving what truly matters – especially when it comes to our family, health, and core values.

Modern Metaphor Applications

In the context of today’s volatile world, Noah’s Ark provides a relevant blueprint for enduring personal and societal “storms,” encouraging proactive safeguarding rather than reactive crisis management.

Spiritually

Creating a “spiritual ark” means nurturing inner strength, values & meaning, offering a foundation as external events shift unpredictably. This includes practicing mindfulness, gratitude and connecting with support communities.

Health-wise

A “health ark” refers to preparing for health challenges by maintaining fitness routines with good nutrition and building resilience against illness or stress. Proactive approaches help weather medical/psychological storms.

Familywise

Building a “family ark” means ensuring strong relationships, emotional safety, and open communication. It involves intentionally creating traditions, emergency plans, and a culture of support that can withstand difficult times.

Financially

A “financial ark” consists of wise saving, risk management, and adaptability to shifting economic conditions. Creating contingency plans, and investing in stability helps families survive downturns/capitalize on new opportunities.

Relevance in Contemporary Times

Today’s society faces digital disruption, geopolitical instability, changing cultural norms, and environmental challenges—each akin to unpredictable storms. By considering Noah’s Ark, families and individuals can build metaphorical vessels of preparedness, rooted in wisdom, flexibility, and hope. The story ultimately inspires action born from insight rather than fear, urging deliberate, compassionate, and strategic building for the future.

Key Takeaways

  • Build an individualized “ark” by identifying your essential core values, consistent with your needs and sufficient resources in each domain.
  • Develop habits of early detection/prudent response/ongoing learning.
  • Prioritize community, resilience, and adaptability, as your foundation.

This metaphor encourages purposeful preparation, grounded optimism, and adaptive strategies for thriving amidst constant change, to be buoyant.

STRENGTHEN YOUR OWN PERSONAL FOUNDATION UNTIL IT IS ROCK SOLID.

As a Structural Design Engineer in training, one of my earliest lessons was that tall buildings can only go as high as the foundation is strong and deep.

We need a strong foundation if we wish to accomplish a lot in life, just as a skyscraper needs a deeper foundation than a home.  The higher one goes, the more we need the stability that such a foundation affords. If we are building a great life, we want it to be strong enough to handle the surprises that we’ll likely encounter. With a Strong Personal Foundation, we can weather almost any personal curve ball surprises or professional storms.

We have an expression that we use a lot around here: “Without integrity, nothing works”.  Integrity could be defined as living our life authentically, aligned with Universal Principles and doing what works.

Again, as a former Design Engineer, when I hear about tragic stories in the media where an inspector sees a crack in a foundation of a structure and doesn’t think anything about it or report it, I’m stunned. Foundations were not designed to have cracks. Then later, when the bridge or structure collapses and there is a loss of life that could have been avoided, I sadly wonder how this could be. Again, “without integrity, nothing works.”

We advocate a commitment to accurate and complete work, in all aspects of life and relationships. We can’t defy gravity and Universal Principles.

As the saying goes, we might ignore Universal Principles and Universal Principles will not ignore us. Thus, let’s do our best to be impeccable.

Building a Personal Foundation takes time. Story of the Bamboo Tree.

You probably have heard of the story of the Chinese Bamboo Tree as a metaphor for patience, persistence, and unseen growth. After planting a bamboo seed, it is watered and cared for over four years with no visible results. Then, in the fifth year, the tree rapidly grows to 90 feet tall in just six weeks. During the initial years of no visible progress, the bamboo was secretly building a strong and deep root system to support its future growth.

One of my clients, inspired by that principle and his consequent results, nicknamed himself ‘The Big Bamboo’. Our younger daughter recently had this experience in all aspects of her life after about that kind of time frame.

A repeat personal note, as we plan to Crescendo 2025/Launch 2026.

I personally have been stopped in my tracks on innumerable occasions with incredibly disheartening news and unwanted, demoralizing setbacks, as I’m sure you have also. Many times, I needed to calm down before reacting too quickly and de-stress before determining helpful next steps.

I’ve found that with high trust productive dialogue, within my various networks of relationships/communities of support, I can generate enough personal power to develop a mindset of curiosity, fascination, discovery and wonder in the face of any heart-wrenching situations that’d normally shut me down, never mind completely overwhelm me. Hence, I have been able to learn & creatively brainstorm my way forward. It continues to this day.

PS – a bonus question, for all of us to consider in the weeks ahead??

What’s the value of creating a throughline as a life theme through chaos?

Creating a throughline as a life theme through chaos means identifying a consistent, underlying thread or core value that weaves through your life story—even when surrounded by unpredictability or turmoil. This throughline can provide a sense of continuity, meaning, and purpose, helping you make sense of—and grow from—the challenges and disruptions you encounter. In summary, to “create a throughline as a life theme through chaos” is to discover, focus, and intentionally live out the values or drives that define you, using them as an inner anchor when outer circumstances are confusing or unstable – a great way to navigate & create.
